ROMEOVILLE – Five Lewis University men’s volleyball student-athletes, Ryan Coenen (Franklin, WI/Franklin), Kevin Kauling (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley), Keaton Long (Plano, Texas/Plano), Tyler Mitchem (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook HS) and Tyler Morgan (Dike, Iowa/Dike-NewHartford) were selected by the USA Volleyball National Team Development Program (NTDP) to attend a joint training session for boys and men’s age groups national teams.
The session will run from late July through early August, coinciding with this summer’s Olympic Games in Tokyo, in Anaheim, Calif., at the National Teams Training Center.
“I’m proud of this group of young men,” Lewis head men’s volleyball coach Dan Friend said. “It is always a great opportunity to be in the USA gym. They are all talented athletes who have worked hard and represent themselves and Lewis extremely well.”
The athletes on all three teams comprise some of the best of the next generation of men’s players and have their eyes on the Olympic Games in Paris in 2024, Los Angeles in 2028 and beyond.
The training session, which will take place at the National Teams Training Center, will coincide with this summer’s Olympic Games in Tokyo and players will be encouraged to watch the matches.
Because these teams will not compete internationally in 2021, USA Volleyball has invited the U19 programs from Bulgaria, Canada, and Puerto Rico to attend and help create a strong international friendly experience.
Coenen, a five-time AVCA All-American and two-time MIVA Player of the Year, was third in the nation this past season in kills per set averaging 4.36, fourth in points per set (5.06) and sixth in attacks per set with 9.49. He led the MIVA in all three of those categories.
Kauling, a two-time AVCA All-American, finished the season second in the nation in assists per set with 10.84 and led the MIVA in that category. He guided an offense that finished the season ranked third in the country hitting percentage at .340.
Long appeared in nine matches with three starts in his freshman campaign. He averaged 1.32 kills while hitting .182 in 19 sets played this past season. Long had a career-high 11 kills in the Flyers season opening win over Campbellsville back in January. He added five kills in Lewis’ NCAA semifinal contest against BYU.
Mitchem, a three-time AVCA All-American, was second in the country in hitting percentage at .490 and third in blocks per set with 1.3 this past season. He recorded a career-high 16 kills against Ball State on March 5 and recorded a career-high 10 blocks against Campbellsville.
Morgan, an incoming freshman from Dike, Iowa, has played club volleyball for Johnston Volleyball Club from 2017-current. He was named to the 2018 Boys 16 USA All-Tournament team, was named to the 2020 VolleyballMag Top 25 Boys Underclassmen to Watch and was named to the 2020 Boys Youth National Training Team.
The head coaches of each of the teams are Chris McGown (Gold Medal Squared) for the Men’s Collegiate Training Team), Kevin Burch (Ohio State men’s head coach) for the Men’s U21 Training Team and Charlie Sullivan (Springfield men’s head coach) for the Boys U19 Training Team.
